Turin Brakes performed at the SU last night - 19thNov. Following the release of their new album - We Were Here, available on Vinyl also. Such a good band - some of the best guitar playing I've ever heard, such a good band to watch live.
FUNK, ROCK & SOUL - 4 piece band. Jamiroquai's band, and Dizzie's backing singer. They came and performed at my uni on the 18th November. A great band, with a great rhythm. Even got a free CD.
Seriously do not understand what it is about the industry now a days, but every artist other One Direction seem to get criticised about what they produce, when really it should be the other way around. Lily Allen had always had her own individual style and opinions. Ok so in my opinion it might not be one of the best songs that has come from her, but she has had some absolute classic records. Before when we've had videos like Golddigga by Kanye or some of the videos that Rihanna uses for her recordings, they have never seemed to have been that much of an issue - so when you get an artist like Lily who decides she wants to give her opinion against women being objectified in the industry, shit starts to kick off. There seems to be a problem in our culture at the moment where if you are creative, and you know who you are and how you want to be portrayed, you instantly get shouted down, most of the time by the men in the industry. They will happily criticise you saying your being racist etc etc, but if they decide to do the same then thats absolutely fine.
If you don't like it then don't watch it, if you feel uncomfortable then don't watch it, if you did that then you would never watch any music videos really in all honesty. There will always something that someone doesn't like - that's why we have different genres of music, different role models, so that everybody will find something that they enjoy. You don't wear any clothes 'Miley Cyrus', people are quick to start ranting 'what the fuck is she doing', but again if you do the opposite and wear clothes, critics and the public still aren't happy. you can't do wrong from right so it seems. All this women being objectified bullshit has been far too blown up in the media. No one forces girls to do what they do, wear what they wear - pop stars, rockstars all have a choice. Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Miley didn't have to wear what they wore, didn't have to do the dances in which they did but they chose to because they believe that the more money you make is more important than the music you make. That is the message which is being portrayed to young girls now-a-days, there's no passion left in anything anymore. The issue really deep down that a few people seem to have with Lily's new video is that she can sell records with clothes on, as she is talented musician. People obviously have forgotten what a joke is, and need to go and find a sense of humour. Read Lily Allen's responses to the video first rather than be as quick to jump to an opinion, and start ranting.
Putting on a 'Brooklyn warehouse rave' in are SU. We have 2 big house DJ's Cardinal and Benton. Played at Bestival and Outlook festival this summer. Also many more up and coming acts to play you some decent tunes. We got set a task in our seminar to put a night of our choice on, and this is what the result came too. Including bucket drummers, special decor and our very own graffiti wall. Bound to be a good night and time to create a little excitement in the quiet town which is High Wycombe.
Watched this band at The Fleece in Bristol at the start of the year, they were supporting Wilko Johnson. They're a two man band from Wales, defiantly a band worth watching - really know how to get a crowd going, perfect band for the live industry. And to have gotten the opportunity to support Wilko Johnson on one of his final tours says it all really. To me they have a rock sound infused with a rhythm and blues style. After a few pints they're bound to have dancing!
I've over played this song far to much this weekend, can't help it though The Libertines just seem to be the perfect band to listen to on any occasion - especially this song. From catchy up tempo guitar riffs, to the stand out sound of front men Pete Doherty & Carl Barat. Raw classic talent that has come from Britain. This band although unfortunately are no longer together have never failed to disappoint me. It really fucks me off that some people cannot see past their 'druggy' reputaion to appreciate the talent that has come from them. Maybe they should try it they might eventually manage to get their dumb heads out of their asses. It seems that the toughest acts to work with always seem to be the best, they even came from one of my favourite labels, what more can I say.
One of the biggest legends in the history of music. Still to this day he is inspiring, not just as a musicians, but for his outlook on life and the way he inspired many of the population. He changed the meaning of Punk, whilst he was in The Clash he infused his music with black music, making their sound stand out and appeal not just to a typical 'punk' audience. Punks had an extremist view on racism, Strummer didn't believe in any of that hence why they covered Police and Thieves originally by Junior Murvin. When he was young he said 'I'm gonna follow music forever and that's the way to live' - from coming from the background that he did, to get to where he was or even still is today is unbelievable. Aspiring musicians or musicians who have already made it need to look back at The Clash and The Mescaleroes and restore dignity back into their music. Well if you can call it their music, what happened to bands writing their own songs now a days. His lyrics were touching, each song was like a story, it's the music that you listen to and get goose bumps. It's songs that make you think wow - how can so much talent come from just one man. I don't want to forget the rest of the bands input though Mick Jones, quoted by Strummer - 'a better guitarist that I'll ever be', Paul Simonon - 'he didn't even no how to play the bass, then after 3 weeks he was better than me'. Now a days bands and artist just don't seem to have that umph, that background, those beliefs to put into their music. Future is Unwritten, a documented film on the man, the legend Joe Strummer.
